Carter grew up in Vinton, Iowa, where he attended Vinton Presbyterian Church. He attended Indian Hills Community College and Iowa State University where he majored in Liberal Arts and Sciences. Now, he and his wife live in North Liberty, Iowa and have four children. Their oldest two work as a teacher and a school psychologist. Their middle son is studying at Iowa State, and his youngest is in high school. Carter works for Linn County as the Director of Linn County LIFTS, a public transportation service that provides transportation for individuals with disabilities and older adults living in Linn County.
Camp Bear Creek was a big part of Carter’s life. He grew up attending family camps and summer camp every year from third grade through high school. He also served as a counselor-in-training (CIT) and worked on camp staff starting as a dishwasher and eventually a counselor. Over the years, Carter continued to stay involved, helping with maintenance and serving on the Board of Trustees. He says, “I love giving back to Camp Bear Creek so others can have the same meaningful experiences that I enjoyed over the years. I also enjoy being part of the bigger picture by helping shape the future of camp and exploring what it can become for future generations.”
In his free time, Carter enjoys staying active through mountain biking and gravel riding. He also enjoys working in his wood shop, hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his family. Carter feels privileged to be part of the Camp Bear Creek ministry. “I am most excited about the lives Camp Bear Creek touches and the lasting impact it can have on individuals’ spiritual growth. Camp provides a unique and unexpected setting where people can grow in their faith, build meaningful relationships, and experience God in ways they might not otherwise expect.”
Carter’s favorite Bible verse is John 15:15: “Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.” This verse is featured in Carter’s favorite camp song as well. “John 15:15 reminds me of the importance of friendship, faith, and the meaningful relationships we build through camp.”
